Feeling Spiritually Weak? Why That's Great News

By Tammye Hamilton

I had a pretty lousy week. An unexpected family emergency slammed into my schedule and life was disrupted by all that came with it. I woke up feeling very low and exhausted. I couldn't seem to rise above the circumstantial funk I was in.

Later that day, I ran into a friend who I could immediately see was struggling. Only she didn't just have a bad week. Her life is hard.  Circumstances beyond her control have created daily challenges for her. It looks to me like she rarely gets a break.

I felt such compassion for my sweet friend. When she said, "I wish we could talk sometime." I heard myself say, "How about this week? I'll text you."

I walked away wondering how I would make that happen. I already had more on my plate than I could accomplish. I had just committed to being in three places at once. Never mind the fact that I was struggling so much myself that I felt I had nothing to offer my friend.

But this I knew: It was no coincidence that I ran into her that day. God could have sent me an encourager. I could have encountered a friend whose own emotional tank was full and ready to splash over on me with joy. Sometimes that happens.

Not that day. That day I encountered someone whose tank was emptier than mine. I had nothing to offer. And that's the good news.

My theme verse for this season of life is 2 Corinthians 12:9: "But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."

If we really get this, our weaknesses can't stop us. Our struggles just mean His power is made PERFECT!

When you've got nothing, when all your knowledge and gifts have failed you, when you feel like a total screw up, when you don't even want to get out of bed. If you are willing, that is the moment when His power takes over!

We can thrive in the low places because His power rests on us! We may not feel it, we may need propping up, but listen, the power of God rests on us!

And guess what? When I say I've got nothing to give, that's when His power manifests. Not when I fake it or try to muster it up. Only when I admit it. Paul said he BOASTED about his weaknesses, that's when His power takes over! All we have to do is show up and listen for His voice. That's pretty incredible.
