There’s That Word Again…”Submission”
By Mavis Tipton
Submission a word that a lot of people do not like, nor do they act upon it in a positive way.
“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”
There are many verses in the Bible that instruct us on submitting. Many times we women get our feathers raised when we hear this word, as it many times refers to us submitting to our husbands. Eph. 5:22
Remember we are children of God, and as children we are to submit and obey our Father. The lesson being the sooner we learn to do this the easier our life will be.
What is submitting? An easy definition is: doing it whether you want to or not.
When Buddy and I were new Christians we served under a strong man of God, who had definite ideas of how he wanted things done. He asked us if we would serve as youth leaders, and we said yes.
He called a meeting with us and some other couples that would be helping. We were very excited to get started and to share ideas. Much to our dismay we weren’t asked for our opinion or ideas. He had it all planned out what he wanted and we were to execute it.
We didn’t say anything we just did what he asked. We respected him as the Pastor. It really didn’t cross our minds to go against him. In retrospect it was Submission 101.
He was very instrumental in helping us obey God’s calling on our lives. The pastor had told Buddy that any time he was between jobs that he could work at the church.
We got all excited about that too! Soon the opportunity came for Buddy to work at the church. We envisioned him doing all kinds of pastoral duties. The first day on the job he came home to tell me the Pastor had him pulling weeds out of the flowerbeds and things of that nature. Did Buddy like it no, but he submitted.
We are often asked to do things we don’t care to do, but if we will look at those occasions as opportunities to serve Him, He will reward us for our faithfulness.
Submission isn’t always an easy thing to do. I have struggled with it over the years of serving the Lord. He has asked me to step out and do things that I didn’t feel qualified to do. But the great thing is He has never let me down.
Whatever the Lord has put in my heart to do He has prepared the way. Sometimes it is stepping out in faith not knowing where He is leading.
But then that’s what it is all about…being obedient.
I don’t know about you…but I don’t like the feeling I have when I am disobedient to the Lord. So I have found it makes life so much better when I surrender and say ‘yes,’ rather than prolong my answer.
Submit, obey and walk in faith, three keys to living a joyful life in Christ.
The most important thing we each can do is:
“James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God.”
