What’s Love Got to Do with It?
By Audrey Botts
It’s hard to show love and share the gospel to people that are offensive, unfriendly, and heartless to you. We have the tendency to avoid them or even react to their behavior.
Jesus never let character flaws get in His way; He looked for the sinners and engaged them with the gospel of God’s love for them. As followers of Christ, we are taught to go into the world and preach the good news of Christ to everyone…even the mean ones. Tough!
“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires ALL people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Tim. 2:3-4
“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”Luke 5:32
To be honest with you, I have difficulties in this area. I have the propensity to elude places that make me act less than Christ-like.
I have avoided a certain well-known commercial store in town, which remain nameless, because of the rude people that shop and work there.
I have come out of this particular store at times irritated and stressed out. I would only go into that store if I desperately needed something.
If Jesus would physically appear here on earth, it would probably be one of the first places He would go to shop. Shop for lost souls, that is.
So, what does that tell me? He loves them and these are the ones He wants us to reach out to. Not just the nice ones. What does love have to do with it? It means everything. You can’t share the gospel of Jesus in this dark world, without having the Light and Love of God in your heart.
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:7.
So back to the store I go. I have tried and I undeniably prayed for love to enter my heart so that I can show His love in this unfriendly environment. It is difficult, but the Lord has given me grace to navigate this difficult terrain.
Just last week, I entered this particular store and noticed a slight change in the atmosphere. I noticed that the store placed some of their employees in strategic areas to greet and help people. I even noticed that some of the sales clerks were even a little friendlier. It was a small change, but it was change that was in progress…Thank you Lord!
There are many places we would like to avoid in sharing the gospel, but remember, Jesus found us where we were. He came down from heaven in love, to save us from darkness. We were not worthy in any way, but the love of Jesus transformed us into righteousness of Christ.
